This Dutch 10 cent piece bracelet from the Netherlands features silver coins from 1937 to 1941, the year Germany occupied Holland. Since Germany took over the mint and removed the image of the queen while also minting coins of zinc instead of silver. Queen Whihemina's image became a symbol of resistance, and the silver coins that were minted with her image were made into patriotic jewelry. Interestingly, during the queen's exile, the U.S. minted these same coins on behalf of the Dutch mint! The letters under the dates on those coins indicate where in the U.S. some of them were minted. D stands for the Denver mint, P for the mint in Philadelphia, and S for that in San Francesco. And guess what else? Some soldiers from the United States brought home "sweetheart" jewelry made of those same coins. Just wow!
