Golden Hills turquoise is all the rage and all the kids want one. Bobby Johnson is here to oblige with one of those heavy gauge repousse pieces all the kids love.
Why do the kids love Golden Hills? Well, it’s a very unusual looking turquoise. It comes in strange violet, deep blue, and powder blue colors. This piece is a cut of the powder blue stuff with hints of violet in the background. The stone still has it’s golden brown matrix that lets you know it’s a natural piece of turquoise and not plastic. So it’s a bit rugged. So what does Bobby do about it? He adds soft touches around it with the repousse work that as I mentioned before, all the kids love.
Why do the kids love repousse work? Well, it’s a demonstration of skill. It’s not easy to hammer and saw appliques like this. Much less do it 14 times and they’re all even and beautiful. What happens there is that the giant Golden Hills cab becomes the center of a flower. Then there’s the depth, as the stone lifts off the bezel of the cuff and you’d want some other elements that complement it. Then you did all of this work in the z-axis, so you may as well make sure that the terminals are a heavier gauge than “normal”. All of this makes for a very heavy 86 grams of cuff, without taking up a lot of space on the x and y axes.
Why is it good to have a “heavy” cuff that doesn’t take up a lot of space on your arm? Well, you want heavy cuffs because they’re statement cuffs. They get seen and their heft makes it quite clear that it’s a valuable piece. But, most cuffs over 60 grams tend to take up space on the x and y axes. A good jeweler and artisan knows this. Think of it as the watch bezel. You want the watch to look “substantial” but you don’t want a bezel over 34mm. What do you do? Well, you build out the watch in the z axis with a thicker bezel and a substantial band. Voila.
Why does this matter to you? Well, it’s a hunk of natural rock with many of its natural elements intact. It’s also a heavy cuff without all of the frills of heavier cuffs -- while maintaining its substantial look. These work well when you don’t want too much on your arm but you want whatever it is to be valuable and look like it. Well, I present to you all the things the kids love: Bobby Johnson, heavy gauge silver, repousse work, and Golden Hills turquoise. It’s a winning combination.
