This turquoise ring is capped on the top and bottom by beautiful Navajo hogan buttons. The warm turquoise has a beautiful dark brown matrix. The artist chose to center the limestone inclusion -- usually indicative that the gem is a real stone, opposed to a piece of plastic. Tarnishing or making intricate metalwork is often done for the same reason.

Silver is extremely malleable, and other metals often aren’t as much. Doing intricate work or leaving indicators of natural beauty is done by many artists to tell the buyer “this is the real deal”. The hogan buttons on the top and bottom are Navajo symbols for house/home (Hogans are traditional Navajo homes built in the southwest for centuries).

I love this piece. It reminds me of a period in art when photography took off and artists brought surrealism into the world. It’s a way of indicating that they aren’t simply reproducing images, but creating something original and beautiful. This ring is exactly that: Original and beautiful.
